ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to examine the effect of instructional material on teaching social studies education using secondary schools in Abuja as case study. Specifically, the study examined  the effect of instructional material on the academic performance of students in Social studies. The study further, determine if the competence of teacher will affect the selection of an instructional material for the teaching and learning of Social studies. Lastly, the study determine if there is a significant different in the performance of students taught with instructional materials and those taught without them. A total of 77 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that Instructional materials have a significant effect on the academic performance of students in social studies in secondary schools. The findings also revealed that the use of instructional material facilitate effective teaching. Furthermore ,it facilitates the effective learning. Lastly , it facilitates rapid understanding of the subject been taught. The study hereby  recommend that teachers/students should improvise locally made instructional materials using resource from the school environment or raw materials from outside the school environment to be used in teaching of social studies. Also,the State Ministry of Education, Education Board and Local Education Authorities should employ competent teachers who can handle the subject very well, because most of the teachers teaching the subject are not qualified.
